The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource. In case you didn't notice, you can click on words in the search results and you'll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren't included in thesauri. I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. So in a sense, this tool is a "search engine for words", or a sentence to word converter. It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it's starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). For example, if you type something like "longing for a time in the past", then the engine will return "nostalgia". It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query.

This definition enabled: i) scale-invariant thermodynamic representation of dynamic order existence, ii) formulation of physical principles exclusively for dynamic order existence and evolution, and iii) mathematical interpretation of Schrödinger's negentropy debt. The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. Thus, negentropy has units when defined based on specific entropy per unit mass, and when defined based on specific entropy per unit energy. In 2009, Mahulikar & Herwig redefined negentropy of a dynamically ordered sub-system as the specific entropy deficit of the ordered sub-system relative to its surrounding chaos. Indeed, negentropy has been used by biologists as the basis for purpose or direction in life, namely cooperative or moral instincts. In a note to What is Life? Schrödinger explained his use of this phrase. Buckminster Fuller tried to popularize this usage, but negentropy remains common. That term may have originated in the 1940s with the Italian mathematician Luigi Fantappiè, who tried to construct a unified theory of biology and physics. In 1974, Albert Szent-Györgyi proposed replacing the term negentropy with syntropy.

The concept and phrase "negative entropy" were introduced by Erwin Schrödinger in his 1944 popular-science book What is Life? Later, Léon Brillouin shortened the phrase to negentropy, to express it in a more "positive" way: a living system imports negentropy and stores it. Under this condition, the principle of Negentropy is therefore necessarily limited in time or. Entropy is stated, in the second principle of thermodynamics, as spontaneously increasing in an isolated system. The negentropy, also negative entropy or syntropy or extropy or entaxy, of a living system is the entropy that it exports to keep its own entropy low it lies at the intersection of entropy and life. Of thermodynamic origin, Negentropy is used systemically as a synonym for cohesion strength while Entropy is a synonym for repulsion force. Freebase (5.00 / 1 vote) Rate this definition:
